- How much fuel cost vs waste fuel
- Talk about changing driving style
- What is rolling resistance and how it effects fuel efficiency
Tyre Pressure and their effect on Fuel
Session 3

The importance of vehicle checks, use and setting up of aerodynamic aids, where fuel goes, engine specifications, use of gearbox, use of rev counter, forward planning, anticipation, the use of retarders and secondary brake devices.
- Why is it necessary to do vehicle checks
- What parts of the veicle check are / can be responsible for fuel saving
- How the engine use the fuel applied
- Talk about commentary drives and anticipation
- Whats is gained from commentary drives
- How can the truck work for you and save fuel.
Again discuss changing driving styles

Watch fuel efficiency DVD – Drive It.
Followed by Group disscussion
Session 5
20 Minutes
Rules of the Road, goods vehicle speed limits, use of mobile phones and satellite navigation, road markings and restrictions specific to goods vehicles.
- Discuss rules of the Road, USE highway code as examples
- Explain the capabilities of what a sat nav can and CANT do.
- What are the HGV stopping distances and how harsh braking effects fuel efficiency
- What are HGV speed limits on Different roads.
Engine idling costs.
Session 6
20 Minutes
Driver fatigue, tiredness and fitness to drive.
- Show videos of HGV accidents relating to fatigue
- How to prevent tired driving
- Ways to help but not eradicate tired driving
Coffee and high energy drinks when driving
Session 7
20 Minutes
Driving large commercial vehicles in severe weather.
- Talk about the different types of weather and how it can affect us and the vehicle.
- How weather can affect vehicle stability and stopping distances.
- The importance of tyres, tyre inflation and the affects it can have on the vehicle with regard to aquaplaning.
- High winds, and how it can affect vehicle stability, what actions should be taken and how we can source advanced weather information as a preventative measure.
Session 8

Road traffic accident procedure.
Action to be taken by the driver at the scene and away from the scene.
- What constitutes an accident, types of damage?
- What the drivers have to do at the scene of an accident.
- What has to happen following the accident, what documentation, notification are required.
- New Vehicles including LEZ’s & ULEZ’s
What do in the event of death or injury, and who we have to give our documents to and the time scales.
